The Mantle Collection

We recently vamped up the rock collection on our mantle, along with adding some other things to display. I really wanted one of these little shelf things with tiny compartments to hold smaller trinkets. I found this one on etsy, and it's perfect!

When we first started looking for a place, Mike pointed out in every single place where the rock collection would probably go. Prior to that I've never actually seen the whole collection, it was away in boxes for some time, so I had NOOOO idea how diverse and immense this collection was. I thought it would be about 10 things, tops. Fast forward to us moving to a place with a wonderful original mantle and the whole thing is covered with minerals, gems, fossils, seashells, and even a meteorite. I remember the particular moment when I realized how much he had, we had a couple of friends over as he started to decorate the mantle and we were all like "holy shit it just keeps on going". It was like the Mary Poppins bag of rocks.

Don't get me wrong, we both love this collection. But ever sinse we moved we kept on trying to find a new solution to displaying everything so that it really shines as much as possible. A few sundays ago I was bored, and it was pouring out, so we re-situated the whole thing, with my new etsy purchase being a focal point. Also, I will stand by the fact that using books with pretty spines is the best fall back plan for decorating ever.

That red pencil actually belonged to John Waters. Otherwise, it wouldn't be display worthy, of course. He threw a few of them out into the crowd at one of his speaking engagements we were at, and we caught one! it the only eyebrow pencil brand he will use on his signature mustache.
Pretty pyrite!
According to Mike, this calm is over 100 million years old. Wowza!
Gold!

This rocks here will actually glow fluorescent colors while under black light. It makes a great nerdy party trick.
This is the meteorite. It's mind boggling that you can own and touch something that isn't from this planet, isn't it? Weird thing to think about.

Love,
Midge
